This historic Brooklyn carriage house has lived many lives—built in the mid-1850s, it was a stable until the early 20th century, and also a stop on the Underground Railroad. Later it was converted to a garage, and then a residential duplex. Our design focused on restoring the building’s original charm. Adhering to landmark designation guidelines, we added extra space with a small addition, but overall, kept things super cozy. Defined rooms are shaped by warm colors, quaint patterns, and natural woods, with playful surprises, like a classic clawfoot bathtub in the corner of a bedroom. In the sun-lit kitchen, a hidden walk-in pantry is one of the home’s most delightful features.

Wall lights from Mullan Lighting accent the
addition, which features cedar wood
cladding in a pine tar finish.

Zak + Fox wallpaper peeks out from
a powder room under the stairs.

The kitchen features Calacatta Vagli marble
countertops and backsplash from Bas Stone,
with ceramic tiles from BDDW installed
above a marble ledge.

The pantry doors open to reveal storage
concealed by a curtain with open shelving above.
