Description: This project is a full renovation of a great loft space north of Union Square Park. The space was designed to maintain the open feel of the loft while creating a series of private and flexible spaces. The tall ceilings gave us the opportunity to design a bi-level library, accessed by a cantilever brake-form steel staircase. The steel catwalk with perforated decking that serves the upper library level is suspended from the ceiling. The cool custom steel structure and white epoxy floors are juxtaposed against warm random plank teak kitchen cabinetry and bookshelves. The gallery space for the client’s collection of painting and photographs provides a segway between the more open living/dining space and more intimate den and bedrooms. Because the loft was designed for an individual, we designed a series of teak, steel and glass bookshelves and sliding doors that created an airy and spacious layout with the flexibility of creating private spaces when needed.
